FEEL RELAXED AND READY AS WE CAPTURE MEANINGFUL MOMENTS THAT REFLECT THE LOVE, CONNECTION, AND JOY OF YOUR FAMILY'S STORY.

Thanks so much for booking a session with A. McGrath Photography!

I’m so excited to capture this special stage of your life and create memories that will last a lifetime. I understand that hiring a professional photographer is an important investment, so to help you get the most out of your session, I’ve put together this guide to answer the number one question I get: what to wear.

First and Foremost: Don’t Stress

Choosing outfits for your whole family can feel a little overwhelming, but try not to stress! This guide is here to help you feel confident in your choices and ensure you love how your photos turn out. If you ever want styling advice or help coordinating outfits, just reach out, I’m always happy to chat! Feel free to text me your outfit ideas, and I’ll gladly offer suggestions and help you put together looks you’ll love.

Plan Ahead

Pick and plan your outfits a few weeks before your session. Avoid waiting until the last minute to coordinate, as rushing can make things stressful. Chances are you already have great pieces in your closet to create perfect outfits, so there’s no need to spend a fortune on new clothes. Giving yourself plenty of time will help you feel excited and confident in what you’re wearing!

NO. 01: LOCATION

Let the environment help guide your outfit choices. If we are in the studio, neutrals and soft tones always photograph beautifully against the clean simple backdrop. In the summer, be mindful of all the bright greens outdoors and consider softer earth tones, neutrals, or muted colors that complement the setting. For fall, rich tones like rust, mustard, navy, and cream work well with the changing leaves. At the beach, light tones like whites, soft blues, and warm beige look beautiful against the sand and water.

NO. 02: MOM FIRST

We so often put ourselves last but this time begin with what you love. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Maybe it is a flowy dress your favorite top and jeans or a piece that just feels like you. Once you have an outfit that you feel good in it becomes easier to coordinate the rest of the family around it. When you feel great it shows and that energy sets the tone for the whole session.

NO. 03: DON'T MATCH

You do not need to have everyone wearing the same color. In fact, it often looks more natural and timeless when each person’s outfit feels like its own while still working well with the rest. Choose a palette of a few complementary tones and build from there. Mixing in different textures like knits, linen, or denim and adding subtle patterns like stripes or florals can add interest without feeling busy. The goal is to create a cohesive look that feels relaxed and pulled together without being too perfect.

WHAT'S YOUR VIBE?

Do you want your session to feel casual and relaxed, boho and whimsical, funky and colorful, or more classic and fancy? Thinking about the overall mood you want helps guide outfit choices and styling so everything feels authentic to your family.

START WITH ONE PIECE

Once you know the location, environment, and vibe you are going for, select one outfit you love to work around. My tip is always to start with mom first but if you fall in love with an outfit for your little one first, that is totally fine. From there, choose a color palette that you love and that works well in the setting where we will be taking photos.

HAVE FUN WITH IT

Be sure to select pieces that fit the weather at that time of year. Piece by piece add items you love for each family member. Mixing patterns and solids with different textures adds interest and depth to your photos.

Choosing Your Color Palette

Look at your session location and pick colors that complement the surroundings. Choose a main color you love, add one or two complementary shades, and include an accent color for visual interest. Coordinate outfits by mixing textures and keeping patterns subtle. Above all, wear colors and clothes that feel comfortable and true to your style so your photos look natural and timeless.

Choosing colors that work well together helps your family look coordinated without being too matchy. It’s best to avoid very bright or neon colors since they can distract from your faces and expressions. Instead, go for soft, muted tones or classic shades that will look timeless and natural. Think about how the colors flow together and mix textures to add depth and interest to your outfits.

See below for some example color palettes.

Preparing Your Kids for Their Outfits

Getting kids ready for a photo session can be a bit of a challenge so it helps to prepare them ahead of time. Make sure their outfits fit well and are comfortable. Avoid anything too tight or itchy that might make them squirm. It is a good idea to have them try on their clothes a day or two before the session so you can make any adjustments if needed.

Let your kids know what to expect and remind them that after the photos they can change into something more comfortable or even get a special treat. I am definitely not above a little bribery to keep those smiles coming. Helping them feel involved and excited about what they are wearing can make the whole experience smoother and more fun for everyone.

Going to be cold?

Layer like crazy. Adding layers not only keeps everyone warm and comfortable but also brings texture and depth to your photos. Think cozy sweaters, scarves, cardigans, and cute jackets that can be put on or taken off as needed. Layers also make it easy to adjust outfits if the weather shifts.

Shoes matter

Footwear shows in lots of photos so make sure everyone’s shoes feel like part of the outfit. Clean boots, neutral flats, simple sandals, or barefoot for little ones can all work depending on the look.

Make it fun

A relaxed attitude makes all the difference. Keep expectations flexible and go with the flow if things get silly or unpredictable. Some of the best moments come from laughter, movement, and genuine connection. Let your kids be themselves and trust that we will capture the magic in the in-between moments too.
